Karen Christensen, Manager of the City of Aurora’s Neighborhood Redevelopment Division, was born and raised on the north side of Chicago. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Northern Illinois University, with a B.A. in Social Sciences. Christensen taught American Government, Economics, Sociology, and Language Arts at the high school and middle school levels before entering the field of public administration and land use planning.
Prior to joining the City of Aurora’s Community Development staff in 1999, she worked for the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (1986-1993 and 1997-1998), the City of Missoula, Montana (1993-1996) and the Will County Land Use Department (1996-1997). Christensen is the author of Walkable Missoula, numerous research and policy documents, and seven poetry manuscripts. She is a member of the International City Managers Association and Lambda Alpha International, an honorary land economics society.
Her career includes extensive work with local, regional, state, and federal agencies on grant administration, project management, resource conservation, economic development, and long-range planning.
