6th Annual St. Baldrick's Fundraiser

Aurora Police officers are spearheading their 6th annual event at which they hope to surpass the nearly $27,000 they raised last year for the non-profit St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization dedicated to childhood cancer research.

Their efforts will culminate on Sunday, April 22, when several Aurora officers will shave their heads in exchange for donations at Mike and Denise’s 1760 N. Farnsworth Av., Aurora, starting at 1 p.m. Aside from the “shave-a-thon”, a 50/50 raffle, prize raffles, and other surprises are planned.

Once again this year, the officers are inviting members of the general public to sign up as “shavees” to help them raise money. Since 2007, St. Baldrick’s events staged by the Aurora Police have netted over $124,000. Officers are also seeking men and women to have 12 inches of their hair cut off and donated to “Locks of Love”, a public, non-profit organization established in 1997 which provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation was founded in 2000 when three New York City executives turned their annual St. Patrick’s Day party into a fund raiser and ended up shaving their heads in a show of solidarity for children with cancer—hence the name “St. Baldrick’s”—a mix of “St. Patrick’s” and “bald”. Since the first event, the Foundation has raised over $123 million to support cancer research and fellowships. All of the money is generated by “shavees”, event organizers, volunteers, staff, and board members. St. Baldrick’s does not raise money through telemarketing or mass mailings. The foundation uses the donations to fund more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. Government.

Worldwide, 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year making it the number one killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

Aurora Police officers are taking donations through the day of the event. They are also seeking prize donations to raffle off the day of their “shave-a-thon”. For more information, contact Aurora Police Investigator Dave Adams at 630-256-5664.
