El Dia de los Ninos
The Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board (AHHAB) celebrates its 10th year of promoting youth literacy as part of “El Dia de los Ninos,” or “Children’s Day,” Saturday, April 28.
The traditional Latin American event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Aurora Transportation Center east parking lot near Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue. The AHHAB has teamed up with East Aurora School District 131, West Aurora School District 129 and the City to provide a day of storytelling, reading and activities for the entire family.
Both school districts will provide more than 3,000 books to give away free to children who visit literacy stations staffed by volunteer teachers. The event is free to the public, and food will be available to purchase.
Activities will include stage performances by District 129 and District 131 students, the Dave Rudolf Magic Show, the Aztec Dancers, inflatables, face painting and more. The Aurora Goddess, who is represented on Aurora’s 175th anniversary poster this year, will be making an appearance at the event.
Other organizations providing free children’s activities will be the Phillips Park Zoo, Aurora Fire Department, Aurora Public Library, Fox Valley Park District, Rush-Copley Medical Center, Aurora Township, Family Focus, Faith Tabernacle, Adonai Ministries and New Hope Lutheran. Provena Mercy Medical Center will be providing blood pressure screenings.
Event sponsors include the Granoff Family Foundation, Reembolsos Latinos, Waubonsee Community College, Hollywood Casino, Old Second National Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Ministerios Adonai, Xpert Insurance, Country Financial, Peter Hurtado, Colonial Café, Guitar Center and Aurora Second Ward Alderman Juany Garza.
Founded in 2002, the City of Aurora’s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board is a group of volunteers dedicated to raise awareness of Hispanic issues in Aurora and to celebrate the contributions they make to the community.
