Aurora Police National Drug Take Back
The Aurora Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies nationwide as they partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in collecting expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications on Saturday, April 28.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., people can bring these medications to the front desk of the department’s headquarters, 1200 E. Indian Trail, and turn them in for safe disposal, no questions asked.
The National Take Back Initiative is the third in which Aurora Police have participated. The events were started by the DEA in response to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health that estimated there were 7 million current, non-medical users of prescription drugs in the United States. The study concluded that there were more Americans abusing these drugs than the number of cocaine, heroin, and hallucinogen abusers combined.
Studies have shown that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends including those found in the home medicine cabinet. Officials say that expired, unused, and unwanted prescriptions in homes are a potential source of supply that fuels drug abuse and is an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.
Since the first event in September, 2010, 498.5 tons of medications have been collected.
