Aurora Officers Taking The Plunge For Special Olympics

Several Aurora Police Officers will be ‘taking the plunge’ for Illinois Special Olympics during the 9th annual Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge on March 4 at Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville.

Last year, a team from the Aurora Police joined almost 300 other brave men and women as they jumped into the icy waters of Loon Lake inside the park. The event raised almost $98,000 for Special Olympics.

The goal of the plunge is to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics Illinois so the organization can continue to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Donations for the Aurora Police team known as the “Cops and Convicts” are being taken by Sgt. Doug Podschweit who can be reached at 630-256-5772 or emailed at podschwd@apd.aurora.il.us.

The plunge will take place at 1 p.m. Interested spectators can show up at the Kendall County Fairgrounds on Rt. 71 and East Highpoint Rd., Yorkville, where they will be bused to Loon Lake beginning at 12:30.

Last year, Aurora Police Officers raised over $15,000 for the charity through various fund raisers and events. The feat means that they will again appear on the back of the official 2012 Special Olympics Torch Run T-shirt for the 4th consecutive year.
