Aurora Makes The Grade In E-Government Study
With the City offering residents more options than ever to stay in touch with the latest Aurora news, events and information, Illinois’ second largest city has earned high marks in a recent E-Government study.
The University of Illinois-Chicago study examined features on local government websites that could contribute to civic engagement through information about government and community as well as through interactive or participatory opportunities online. The research is based on content analysis of government websites in the 75 largest U.S. cities and 20 largest Illinois cities between March and May 2011.
Aurora ranked fifth best in the study of Illinois’ 20 largest cities and likely already has improved its standing by adding more communication tools to its arsenal.
The City was recognized for providing residents an online newsletter and email updates, downloadable information materials, a searchable database and an RSS feed, among other critical factors taken into account for the study. Late last year, the City rolled out social media platforms, another component of the study, by creating accounts on both Facebook and Twitter.
The City’s communication strategy has been to drive residents to Aurora’s website not only because of the vast information offered but also to demonstrate open and transparent government. Last year, the City’s website generated more than 500,000 unique visitors with the help of a redesigned, more user-friendly homepage as well as the start of a monthly E-newsletter and social media.
Aurora’s website also works in tandem with the City’s Customer Service Center by offering an online request form where residents can request non-emergency City services.
Residents can sign up for Aurora news and information via Facebook, Twitter and email updates conveniently from the City’s website at www.aurora-il.org.
