Aurora Police Observe National Police Week

On Thursday, May 17, the Aurora Police Department’s annual Police Week Memorial Service will be at 3:00 p.m., at the police headquarters, 1200 East Indian Trail. The service, which will feature formations from the Aurora Police Honor Guard and Pipe and Drum Unit, is dedicated to the memories of Alfred Olin and Thompson Richardson, the only two Aurora Police Officers ever killed in the line of duty. Retired Aurora Police Sergeant Ralph Martin, who passed away on December 22, 2011, will also be remembered.

Aurora Police are inviting area citizens to display blue ribbons on their vehicles in support of police officers and law enforcement. The ribbons can be picked up at APD Headquarters, 1200 E. Indian Trail; Aurora City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place, and the City’s Customer Service Center at 3770 McCoy Drive.

2011 marks the 16th straight year the Aurora Police Department and the City of Aurora are celebrating National Police Week. It has been observed nationally since President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 proclamation that designated the week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. The same proclamation named May 15th as National Police Officer’s Memorial Day to honor those officers that have been killed in the line of duty.
