Plan Review and Permits

When an application is made for a building permit, the Fire Prevention Bureau reviews it for conformity to the adopted City of Aurora Codes for Fire Protection Systems, Fire Department Access, water supply and material storage handling. After review of the Building permit a Letter with the review comments is sent out to the architect, general contractor and business owner, if known. This letter will state any further conditions which may have to be met during construction or if additional information is needed prior to the Fire Prevention Bureau approving the permit application. In most cases a Hazardous Materials Disclosure statement form will be required to be returned directly to the Bureau. It is the General Contractors responsibility to have address posted, access to site, all required permits posted and required inspections called for.

Separate Fire Department Permits and submittal of appropriate plans are required for the following types of activities:

  • Temporary Construction Fuel Storage tanks
  • Fuel Storage tanks
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • Building Suppression Systems
  • Hood Suppression Systems

Special permits from Fire Prevention are required for:

  • Fireworks
  • Bonfires
  • Open Burning
  • Hazardous Material storage

For your Fire Permit Plan review to go smoothly, the following must be submitted:

  • Original Fire Department Permit properly filled out and signed.
  • 3 copies of plans.
  • Supporting documentation as required by type of permit.
