Green Infrastructure Implementation Project

Project Purpose

The City of Aurora - Green Infrastructure Implementation Project is designed to help improve water quality in the Fox River by:

• Reducing nonpoint source (NPS) pollution that reaches the Fox River.
• Increasing stormwater infiltration and detention capacity in the study area to reduce the amount of runoff that reaches the Fox River.
• Constructing three best management practices (BMPs) demonstration sites.
• Developing a plan for a naturalized, dispersed, stormwater management system within the study area.
• Developing a toolkit to assist redevelopment projects with BMP selection and planning.
• Educating residents about NPS pollution, BMP implementation and how they can help reduce NPS pollution.

Project Description

The City of Aurora Green Infrastructure Implementation Project is located in the McCarty Burlington Neighborhood Planning Area on the near northeast side of the city.

• Total project area – 620 acres, roughly 1 square mile.
• Total project value - $517,000 (grant amount - $300,000).
• Project costs are shared - 58% by the grant amount, 42% by the City of Aurora (expenses or in-kind services) up to the total project value.
• Completion date – June 30, 2010.

• Funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency through Section 319(h) of the Federal Clean Water Act, via Illinois’ Non-point Source Pollution Management Program (IEPA FAA #3190604; Grant Number: C9995200-06).
• Part of an agreement between the City of Aurora and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP, Project #10-8674-20-09).
