Parking Requirements
All vehicles must be parked on cement, asphalt, or pre-existing gravel surfaces. Gravel surfaces established before 1971 at residential properties are considered grandfathered and may be continued as long as they are adequately maintained.
All newly-established parking spaces and driveways require a paving permit from the Division of Building and Permits and must be constructed of cement or asphalt.
Parking on grass or dirt is prohibited at all properties.
Existing gravel surfaces for parking areas and driveways that become more than fifty percent covered with dirt, grass, or weeds lose their grandfathering status and must be either removed or properly surfaced with asphalt or concrete.
Parking on grass or dirt can be cited by the City with fines ranging from $50 to $500 per day.
This standard is important because parking on grass or dirt:
- Is unsightly.
- Can cause tire ruts and uneven grading of yards.
- Can cause tire depressions where stagnant water can collect.
- Can cause tire depressions where stagnant water can provide a breeding place for mosquitoes.
- Detracts from a quality appearance of neighborhoods.
