Recreational vehicle Parking In Residential Neighborhoods

Recreational vehicles such as campers, boats, and trailers may be parked at residential properties but are subject to certain restrictions.

Recreational vehicles may not be parked in front yards or between the house and the street with an exception granted for the limited parking of vehicles for loading, unloading, cleaning, and servicing.

All recreational vehicles-boats, campers and pull-along-type trailers must be parked on a concrete or asphalt surface. There is a restriction permitting only one such vehicle or trailer to be parked per residential property. They may be parked in interior side and rear yards but must be at least three feet from side lot lines and five feet from rear lot lines.

No recreational vehicle shall exceed twenty-five feet in length, eight feet in width or eleven feet in height. Boats may not exceed twenty-five feet in length. Trailers may be single axel only.

Screening is required for all vehicles, boats, campers and trailers that are stored or parked in the open. They may be parked in a completely enclosed garage or structure as an alternative to the screening requirement and size limitation.

This aspect of zoning enforcement is important because improperly parked recreational vehicles in residential neighborhoods:

  • Are unsightly.
  • Mar the front yard appearance of residential neighborhoods and obstruct driver visibility and sight lines thereby adversely affecting public safety.
  • Can obstruct public sidewalks.
  • Detract from the desirability of a neighborhood.
  • Reduce adjacent property values and prevent neighbors from having full enjoyment of their property.

Citations can be issued in cases of non-compliance ranging from $50 to $200 per day.

Violations may be reported to the City of Aurora’s Customer Service Division online or by calling (630) 256-INFO (4636). Please refer to the standards contained within the Aurora Zoning Ordinance, which is displayed on the home page under City Codes, for additional information.
