Vehicle Repair in Residential Neighborhoods

Incidental repair of owner’s vehicles is permitted at residential property. Such work may consist of changing oil, engine repair, rotating tires, and similar minor repairs.

Commercial vehicle repair, where money is exchanged for service or where vehicles not owned by the property occupant are repaired, is prohibited. These activities are disruptive to a residential neighborhood; as is major vehicle repair and bodywork that occurs outside of a garage, out in the open.

Citations can be issued for unauthorized vehicle repair. Fines may be $50 to $200 per day.

This aspect of zoning enforcement is important because commercial repair of vehicles in residential neighborhoods:

  • Introduces undesirable commercial activity and noise into a residential neighborhood.
  • Detracts from the desirability of a neighborhood.
  • Reduces adjacent property values and prevents neighbors from full enjoyment of their property.

Violations may be reported to the City of Aurora’s Customer Service Division online or by calling (630) 256-INFO (4636).
