Commander Joseph J. Groom

CCommander Joseph Groom is responsible for the Bureau of Support Services for the Aurora Police Department, which encompasses Administrative Services, Detention, Intelligence, the Office of Professional Standards, Records, Telecommunications, and the Training division.

Born and raised in Aurora, Commander Groom graduated from Marmion Military Academy. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement Administration and History from Western Illinois University and also attended the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.

Commander Groom became a police officer for the City of Aurora in 1989, was promoted to sergeant in 1998, became a lieutenant in 2002 and was promoted to commander in 2005. During this time Commander Groom served the department in Patrol, DARE, Firearms Instruction, the Field Training Officer program, the Gang Intervention Unit/Special Operations Group, Planning and Research and the Office of Professional Standards. Commander Groom also chairs the Employee Review Board and for nineteen years he has served as a team member, team leader and commander for the Special Response Team.
