The Phillips Park Zoo is home to 3 adult female elk. Their well-forested enclosure is located on the east side of the zoo. You can often see these majestic deer from the observation deck overlooking their enclosure and the pond it contains. They share their home with many native ducks that also seek shelter inside their enclosure.
Elk were once common in the area (Their hHistoric range included most of North America) but are no longer found in Illinois. There are still sizable populations in the western United States and Canada.
Elk are herbivores, and spend the summer grazing on the grasses and other plants growing in their enclosure (as well as hay and grain from the Zoo keepers!).
