Lt. Dan Woods was born and raised on the near west side of Aurora. He is a graduate of West Aurora High School (1989). He earned an Associate’s Degree from Waubonsee Community College, where he also served as a Police Cadet. Lt. Woods was hired as an Aurora Police officer in 1993. During his career, he has served in the Community Policing Unit, Special Operations Group, as a gang investigator and as a task force officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Dan also served as a DARE officer from 1996-2006 at Greenman Elementary and Smith School on the City’s west side. Dan was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2006 where he served as a Community Policing Sergeant, Bike Unit Supervisor, Field Training Sergeant and Traffic Sergeant. Dan is a member of the Police Department’s Drone team and also served as a member of the Employee Review Board, during his time as a Sergeant.
Dan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2020 and is currently assigned as the Area 3 Lieutenant on the City’s far east side. Dan is one of the Coordinators of the Aurora Police Department’s Field Training Program and oversees the Police Department’s Community Policing Unit. In addition to his duties, Dan has also served as a voluntary member of the Police Department’s Pipes and Drum core, as a bagpiper, since 2004. Dan is an avid runner and a self-proclaimed Star Wars nerd.
