The Aurora Police Department is seeking experienced Police Officers for lateral entry. An alternative eligibility list of candidates who have previously been full-time sworn officers, in good standing, of a police department of a municipality, county, or state law enforcement agency will be established. 

Qualified candidates must be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board and have a minimum of two (2) years as a full-time police officer with a law enforcement agency within the State of Illinois.

The selection process will include the following components: oral interview/examination, background investigation, polygraph and psychological assessments, a medical examination. Upon selection candidates must pass a Physical Agility Assessment. 

Lateral new hires will receive a signing bonus of $20,000.00. Signing bonuses are contingent upon a two-year commitment to the Aurora Police Department.

Eligibility for Lateral Police Officers

  • Qualified candidates must be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board and have a minimum of two (2) years as a full-time police officer with a law enforcement agency within the State of Illinois.
  • Must be an U.S. citizen at the time of appointment. 
  • Must possess a valid Class “D” Illinois driver’s license or a valid out-of-state driver’s license of similar classification. 
  • Must be able to meet vision standard at time of appointment. Must be correctable to 20/20 with both eyes open including field of vision/depth perception/color vision within normal ranges. 
  • Must possess a valid Police Officer Physical Ability Test certification/POWER card. Certifications will be considered valid within one (1) year of the issuance date. 
  • Must be of excellent moral character and personal integrity. 
  • A subsequent polygraph and psychological examination will be required, in addition to a thorough background investigation, oral interview/examination, drug screen, and per-employment physical.

Signing Bonus

Lateral new hires will receive a signing bonus of $20,000.00. Signing bonuses are contingent upon a two-year commitment to the Aurora Police Department.
