Alderman At-Large, Robert J. O'Connor, was first elected to the City Council in 1985. He will be up for re-election in 2021. He presently serves as the Chairman of the Finance Committee and member of Building, Zoning and Economic Development (BZE) of the City Council.
He and his wife, Mary, who is a teacher at Bardwell School, have two sons, Tom, who is married to Teresa Waldinger, and John. Alderman O'Connor is a graduate of East Aurora High School, the University of Illinois and the University of Notre Dame Law School. He is an attorney in Aurora and practices law in the area of estate planning, wills and trusts and real estate representation. Alderman O'Connor was sworn in as Mayor in 2016.
He is on the State of Illinois Council on Aging, and is a board member of the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, The Aurora Police Foundation, and the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley. He is also a member of the Aurora Exchange Club and the Kane County Bar Association.
After the early retirement of Mayor Thomas J. Weisner, Alderman O'Connor was unanimously elected by his colleagues on the Aurora City Council to serve as Mayor of Aurora from October 2016 to May 2017.
