[ARCHIVED] Aurora Police investigating fatal crash after pursuit on the city’s east side

News Release - Media Background

The Aurora Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash after a vehicle fled from police.

Just before 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aurora Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at S. Fourth St. and Galena Blvd. Officers identified the driver as a 24-year-old man from Aurora and the front passenger as a 52-year-old Chicago man. The driver was wanted on a felony warrant. The passenger was wanted by the Illinois Department of Corrections. When officers informed the passenger he was under arrest and to exit the vehicle, the driver fled in the vehicle southbound S. Fourth St. from Galena Blvd.

Officers began to pursue the vehicle, but terminated the pursuit due to the speed of the fleeing vehicle. A short time later, officers learned the fleeing vehicle had been involved in a single vehicle crash in the 800 block of S. Fourth St. The vehicle sustained significant damage and both occupants were fatally injured as a result of the crash.

In accordance with Aurora Police Department policy and applicable law, the deaths of both men are being investigated by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force Officer-Involved Death Team.
