Commander Paul Nelson

Commander Paul Nelson is responsible for the Intelligence Bureau for the Aurora Police Department, which encompasses Administrative Services, Detention, Intelligence, Crime Analysis, the Office of Professional Standards, Records, Telecommunications, and the Training division.

Born and raised in Aurora, Commander Nelson graduated from East Aurora High School.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Aurora University and also attended the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.  He is a former Army Reserve officer.

Commander Nelson became a police officer for the City of Aurora in 1987, was promoted to sergeant in 1996, lieutenant in 2004, and was appointed as a commander in 2010.  During this time Commander Nelson served the department in Patrol, the Field Training Officer program, the Investigations Division, Gang Unit, Planning & Research and the Office of Professional Standards.  Commander Nelson was also a member of the Special Response Team for 15 years, serving as a team member, team leader, Marksman/Observer coordinator, and field commander.
