An Aurora Police officer’s quick response and alertness to his surroundings during a call of an armed robbery at a Far East side convenience store have earned him “Employee of the Month” honors for December.

Officer Marcin Lemanski was recognized for his actions in the early morning hours of Nov. 9 when he responded to the intersection of S. Farnsworth Av. And Simms St. to hold a perimeter that had been established by other officers as they attempted to nab the suspects who had just held up the business in the 1600 block of Montgomery Rd. Preliminary information given to officers at the scene was that the suspects were wearing ski masks and driving an SUV. Officer Lemanski’s attention, while holding his position in the perimeter, was instead drawn to two males in a Pontiac Bonneville driving in the area. When one of the males threw an object from the car that appeared to be a ski mask or hooded sweatshirt, he began following them and immediately gave out their descriptions and direction of travel.

The vehicle, as it traveled eastbound on Simms St., suddenly stopped and both subjects ran. Officer Lemanski chased one of the occupants for several blocks before losing sight of him; however, the responding units were able to take the man into custody. Several items of evidence including a bag with the money taken from the business and an air soft pistol believed to be used by the robbers were recovered.

“Because of Officer Lemanski’s quick response and alertness to his surroundings, he was able to zero in on the suspect vehicle even though the initial description didn’t match,” said Chief Greg Thomas. “Instead of getting ‘tunnel vision’, he stayed aware of anything appearing suspicious and because of his extraordinary efforts, a suspect was arrested and evidence recovered.”

Officer Lemanski has been an Aurora Police officer since December, 2007.
