Commander Steve Stemmet was born and raised in Aurora and is a 1990 graduate of West Aurora High School. He is a veteran of the United States Army and began his law enforcement career in 1996 when he was hired by the Montgomery Police Department. Steve became an Aurora Police Officer in 1999. During his career, he has held assignments in patrol, field training officers program, the Special Operations Group as a gang and a narcotics investigator, task force officer with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and as Training/OPS Sergeant. Steve was the 2013 APD Police Officer of the Year. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2014, Lieutenant in 2018. Steve was appointed to Commander of APD's Support Services Bureau in 2021.
Steve earned his Associate’s Degree from Waubonsee Community College in 1994 and his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University in 1996. His professional education includes the FBI Trilogy Leadership Institute, the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University, and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.
