First Fridays

It’s a night of art, fun, music and community at local businesses and venues in downtown Aurora on the first Friday evening of the month. First Fridays in Downtown Aurora invites the community to enjoy art, music, food, theater and more on the first Friday of the month. For more information and for a map of participating venues, click HERE!

First Fridays are the first Friday of every month. First Friday venues have staggered times ranging from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.  First Friday events are FREE! (Theater performances not included.)

Mandatory Housing Class

City and police officials have announced the next round of mandatory crime-free housing classes which owners, landlords, and agents of rental and non-owner occupied residential buildings in Aurora must enroll.

Classes in English will be held Feb. 7, Mar. 21, Apr. 18, May 2.  Spanish classes will be conducted Mar. 7 & May 9.  All of the sessions will be held in the community room of the Aurora Police Department, 1200 E. Indian Trail, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

El Dia de los ninos

Saturday, May 2 from 1-5pm, everyone is invited to attend the annual event known as El Día de los Niños, or Day of the Children.  Located at the Aurora Transportation Center Parking lot at the corners of Spring St. and Lincoln Ave., admission is FREE to join a fun-filled event including education, entertainment and food!

El Día de los Niños is hosted in recognition of the cultural importance of children and families by the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board and sponsored by a variety of local businesses and not-for-profit entities.

1st Responders Appreciation Breakfast

You are invited to attend the 1st responders appreciation breakfast On Sunday, May 3, 2015.  This event is located at St. Rita of Cascia's Hall, 770 Old Indian Trail, from 7 am to 11 am.  1st responders and their families are free.  The public is asked to pay $7 which will benefit the Aurora Fire Museum, the AFD Explorer program and Special Olympics of Illinois.  Children under 12 are free.

The menu will consist of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit, sweet table, juice and coffee.  Donations may also be made payable to Aurora 1st Responders and delivered to the AFD Central Station.

The 2015 Aurora City Council Inauguration Ceremony will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place, Aurora.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will include inauguration remarks by each alderman, the Presentation of Colors by the East Aurora High School NJROTC, and the National Anthem performed by members of the award-winning Waubonsie Valley High School Show Choir.

SE Kane Co Triad shredding & drug take-back event

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 8, seniors are invited to bring any documents that contain personal information for shredding to Prisco Community Center, 150 West Illinois Avenue. Officials recommend the shredding of documents that include tax returns older than seven years; and credit card, banking, and other statements so they don’t fall into the hands of identity thieves. Expired, unused, and unwanted medications will also be accepted for safe disposal.

Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Ceremony

At 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, the Kane County Chiefs of Police will hold its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Ceremony at the Mooseheart Church of God on Rt. 31 between North Aurora and Batavia. The non-denominational service will feature a candle lighting vigil to honor Kane County officers who have been killed in the line of duty as well as formations from area police honor guards and pipe and drum units. 

The special guest speaker is Illinois State Police Trooper Douglas Balder who was critically injured in a crash on January 27, 2014 on I-88 and Eola Road. The crash, which claimed the life of Tollway worker Vincent Petrella, occurred when the two men were assisting the driver of a semi that had become disabled when a second semi plowed into their vehicles causing a massive fire.

2015 marks the 19th straight year the police department and City are celebrating the week, which has been observed nationally since President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 proclamation that designated the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.  The same proclamation named May 15 as National Police Officer’s Memorial Day to honor those officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Latin Jazz Occurrence opening

Latin Jazz Occurrence 5, an exhibit featuring 11 local and global artists inspired by the world of jazz, opens to live music and painting at a reception May 15.

The opening reception at the Aurora Public Art Commission will feature a live performance and reception for Latin Jazz Occurrence 5, which takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 15 at the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place, Aurora. Admission is free. Light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. In addition, to keep the Jazz Occurrence free to the public, Achenbach is selling sketches for $100 each, with proceeds going directly to the artists. APD Annual Memorial Ceremony

On Saturday, May 16, the community is invited to APD’s annual Memorial Ceremony which will salute current and former police officers and feature family-friendly events and activities.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Plaza outside the Aurora Police Department’s Headquarters, 1200 E. Indian Trail, with a service dedicated to the memories of Alfred Olin and Thompson Richardson, the only two Aurora Police officers ever killed in the line of duty. Also memorialized will be three retired Aurora Police officers who passed away since last year’s police week: Officer Perry Rusher, Sergeant Mel Renaud, and Lieutenant Terry Dennin. The Aurora Police Honor Guard will stage formations and a gun salute during the ceremony.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 25, 2015, with step-off at 12:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “In Memory of Many… In Honor of All”. The parade route will be east on Benton Street, north on Broadway, west on Downer Place and ending at River Street. The Memorial Day Reviewing Stand will be in front of the David L. Pierce Art and History Center at 20 East Downer Place for best viewing.

Cop on Top Events

Once again this year, Aurora Police will stage “Cop on Top” events at four area Dunkin’ Donuts shops on May 29.

In exchange for a donation to Illinois Special Olympics, customers will receive a certificate for a free donut.  Patrons donating at least $10 will receive a coffee mug while supplies last. The fundraisers will take place from 5 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts, 1237 N. Eola Rd.; 2380 S. Eola; 2112 W. Galena Blvd.; and 1255 N. Farnsworth Av.  A variety of Special Olympics Torch Run memorabilia will also be for sale.

Ward 9 Clean Up the Streets Day

Help clean-up Eola Road and our business corridor to beautify our Community as we prepare for summer.  The City of Aurora and the Alderman’s Office will supply all of the bags, pickers, and hazard vests.   We have invited all of the civic and community groups in the Ward including the Homeowner’s Associations, Churches, Schools, and the Boys/Girls Scouts to assist us.   Last year we had over 150 volunteers and our goal this year is to have over 250 volunteers from the Ward 9/ Tri-County Aurora area.

The event is Sponsored by more than 40 Aurora businesses.
