Carie Anne Ergo, Chief Management Officer
Carie Anne was promoted to Chief of Staff in 2010 after leading the team tasked with recommending solutions to restructure city services and balance the budget in the face of significant revenue reductions during the nationwide recession. As Chief of Staff, Carie Anne reports directly to Mayor Weisner. She manages the Executive Team facilitating and supporting the department directors in implementing Mayor Weisner's strategic vision.
Carie Anne began her career in public service nearly two decades ago promoting solutions for sound regional growth with the Metropolitan Planning Council. After that, she served the City of Naperville for more than nine years where she was integrally involved in community and media relations, e-government management and the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard strategic planning and performance management system. Mayor Weisner appointed Carie Anne as the City of Aurora's first full-time Public Information Officer in 2006. She was promoted to Assistant Chief of Staff in 2008 focusing on legislation, communications and intergovernmental relations.
A graduate of Calvin College, Carie Anne earned her Master of Science in Public Service Management with distinction from DePaul University where she was named the outstanding student of the year in 2004 by the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Public Administration.
Since coming to Aurora, she has been active in a number of educational initiatives, serving as a founding member of SPARK, a local non-profit initiative committed to ensuring Aurora's children ages 0-6 grow up Strong, Prepared and Ready for Kindergarten. She previously served on the Board of Quad County Urban League. Currently, she participates on the leadership team for Aurora's Pathways to Prosperity education initiative and is an Executive Board Member of the Aurora Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
Carie Anne resides in Aurora's Oakhurst Neighborhood with her husband and young daughter.
Rick Guzman, Assistant Chief of Staff
Rick Guzman has served as Assistant Chief of Staff for the City of Aurora since 2011, working on issues such as housing, development and neighborhood planning for the office of Mayor Tom Weisner during a time of substantial growth and change.
In 1999, Rick was hired as an Assistant Policy Advisor for the Governor of Illinois. He spent time advising the Governor on Economic Development before being promoted to Senior Policy Advisor and focusing on Criminal Justice.
Rick has served in Governor-appointed positions under both Republican and Democratic administrations and is a licensed attorney and a passionate social entrepreneur.
Rick also serves as the City's primary liaison to Aurora's non-profit and faith-based organizations and co-founded his own non-profit, Emmanuel House, in Aurora, along with his wife in 2002. Emmanuel House partners closely with a number of other Aurora-based non-profits to help lower-income families break the cycle of working-class poverty through a unique and dignified pathway to homeownership.
Guzman graduated summa cum laude from North Central College in 1999 and magna cum laude from NIU College of Law where he was awarded the Thurgood Marshall Award for Human Rights. Guzman continues to serve on numerous Boards and Commissions working on public policy issues in state and local government, the private sector and the non-profit world. Rick and his wife, Desiree, live in downtown Aurora with their two young daughters.
Alex Voigt, Assistant Chief of Staff
